Yoga and Peer Support
Join Tamara for a private session that combines restorative yoga and peer support.
Peer support is a form of social and emotional assistance where individuals who have similar experiences, such as mental health challenges or substance use, connect and support each other.
Restorative yoga is a gentle, passive practice that focuses on relaxation and stress reduction through long-held, supported poses, often using props like blankets and bolsters, promoting deep relaxation and a sense of calm.
During your session, you are invited to enjoy a cup of tea and a small chat about where you are that day. Based on this conversation, we will set a a restorative shape that encourages a gentle release of stress and tension. You’re invited to soften and let go while resting in the shape, and to acknowledge any sensations, emotions, or thoughts that arise.
After you release the restorative shape, we once again sit and chat, perhaps about the practice or whatever may arose during the practice.
The key principles behind peer support are:
Shared Experience: The foundation of peer support is the commonality of experiences, allowing for empathy and understanding.
Empowerment: Peer support aims to empower individuals by helping them develop their own goals, strategies, and self-determination.
Non-Clinical: Peer support is not a replacement for professional medical or clinical care, but rather a complementary approach.
Focus on Recovery: Peer support emphasizes health and recovery, rather than focusing solely on illness or disability.
Informal and Formal: Peer support can occur informally, such as when people with similar experiences listen to and support each other, or formally through trained peer support workers.
The benefits of peer support are:
Reduced Isolation: Peer support can help individuals feel less alone and isolated, fostering a sense of community and belonging.
Increased Hope and Resilience: Connecting with others who have similar experiences can build hope, resilience, and confidence in one's ability to overcome challenges.
Improved Well-being: Peer support can contribute to improved mental and emotional well-being by providing a safe space to share experiences and receive support.
Access to Information and Resources: Peer support workers can provide information and resources about formal services and supports, helping individuals navigate the system.
Benefits of Restorative Yoga:
Stress Reduction: The practice can help to calm the nervous system and reduce stress and anxiety.
Improved Sleep: Restorative yoga can promote relaxation and prepare the body for restful sleep.
Reduced Pain: The practice can help to alleviate chronic pain and muscle tension.
Emotional Regulation: Restorative yoga can help to release emotional tension and promote emotional well-being.
Increased Self-Awareness: The practice can help to cultivate a deeper connection with the body and mind
